my favorite summer desserts

i have three favorite months of the year: march, because it starts to warm up and everything again becomes green. october, because it is crispy cool outside and the leaves change into magnificent colors, eating chili, and chilly football games, and halloween is the funnest. and july, my most favorite holiday - our nation's birthday,  the steamy temps, lots of swimming, and because the gardens and orchards are overflowing with the best stuff nature has to offer. peaches, blackberries, sweet corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and zucchini, ect. ect. ect.

it is almost july.
here are a few of my favorite things to make in july.
get ready!

blogging after midnight is like drunk-texting.

the day i took five kids to the crowded air show completely alone on the hottest day of the year.

oh boy, it is after midnight and i am sitting in my bathroom, of all places, blogging. not using the bathroom, though, in case you were wondering. it's a big bathroom and part of it is carpeted, so it's comfortable. at some point today i said to myself that i was going to go to bed early tonight but my husband made me watch what turned out to be one of the best movies ever and i couldn't stop watching it. (the next three days) oh, the suspense. i almost had a panic attack right there in my living room over fictional characters. so i guess i got all riled up and now i can't go to sleep so i am thinking...of stuff.

firstt up: painting. oh for the love of god, i hate painting. but i didn't know that until i was already 2 rooms in. i start projects and never finish. i don't know why i do it, blame it on my zodiac sign? aries. but i have 2 rooms that are half painted and they've been like that for MONTHS. and one is a half bathroom that i could finish in about 1 hour. pathetic. it's time to get it done. and then i have to get the kitchen started before i freak out. pink/mauve tiled backsplash, people! that is what i've been staring at for over a year.

second: sign up for school. 2 years ago i put in an admission request to finish my college degree. i have until the fall of 2012 to start taking classes or i will have to go through the whole process again. and i can't believe it's been two years. i fully intended to go two years ago but travis decided to run for prosecutor, we started campaigning, then we got pregnant, and bought a house, had the babe, and have been a little busy. so now, it is time. we've worked it all out...i have exactly 44 credit hours to get through plus some student teaching and testing. goal is 5 years. i will be a high school social studies teacher, if you were wondering. we'll see.

third: my poor girl, lily, got booted from our bedroom. she has a nice comfy bed at the foot of our bed, but every single morning between 430 - 5ish, without fail, she starts licking herself. and the sound makes me want to kill her. have you seen i am legend? you know the part when willy goes after his dog in the abandon apartment building and he shines his light on the zombies eating something and all you can hear is saliva...moving around? i don't know, but i can't hang with it.

fourth: i bought THE BEST blush today. mary kay cream blush in sheer bliss. love it.

and on that note, i'm out.

nite nite.

homemade pudding pops

i've been playing and tweaking this recipe, so we've had lots of pudding pops in the last week. yum. i bought the cutest monster molds a couple months ago from my most favorite store - t.j. maxx. $4 for 4 of them, in all different colors. cuteness. you can't beat it, but of course, there was only one box of them left and i will probably never see them again since they are an import store. my wise mother told me once, "if you see something in that store that you love, buy it. because you will never see it again." she is right, i've had non-buyers remorse several times after leaving there.

ANYway. mine is just slightly different from the original that i found on pinterest.

2 c. milk
1/3 c. sugar
1/4 c. cocoa powder
1 tsp. vanilla
dash of salt
3 T. cornstarch

mix the cocoa, sugar, salt, and cornstarch together in a bowl until well blended. add the milk and whisk until frothy. pour mixture into a pan and heat over low-medium heat until thickened, stirring constantly once it's hot. pour into molds and freeze. eat. eat. eat. yum. yum. yum.

nash: 7 days shy of 14 months.

don't put your fingers in his mouth. he's a biter.
he says 'mama' but usually only when he is mad/sad or wants out of his crib.
started walking at 10 months and is now running as fast as his little chub legs will take him. love it.
calls any food 'banana'. not surprising, loves bananas.
c.l.i.m.b.i.n.g. o.n. EVERYTHING. it's making me crazy.
holds the title for 'if someone is going to get hurt, it's going to be..." knocking jackson out of first place.
throws balls and chases them while laughing.
thinks he is funny and laughs at himself.
not really interested in talking. says: triston, lily, mama, dada, banana, hi, side (outside), sna (snack) and maybe a few others. lots of pointing and seems to understand anything we say to him.
loves to get his teeth brushed.
loves to take a bath or play in water.
is a little more cautious than his big brothers.
goes up and down stairs all by himself.
hates getting his diaper changed.
favorite thing to do is to look at books.
gives kisses to anyone and everyone and everything EXCEPT when me and travis ask for them. grrr. and sometimes will trick you and try to bite and then laughs. stinker.
is scared of sesame street characters.
super clumsy. we call him weeble-wobble.
loves to eat. begs his brothers for their food and of course, they oblige. :)
will grab fist-fulls of legos and take off running with them before big brothers can catch him.
just recently started throwing fits. especially if he can't go outside when he wants.
loves to go to walks and has no problem hanging out in his stroller.
tries to sneak dog food.

full of wonder and mischief and is just the cutest little thing.

summer sanity

i'm always excited when the boys are about to get out of school. it usually lasts a week or so and then i'm over it. i love my kids and i love to have them home, but holey moley - it's a lot of mess, a lot of fighting, a lot of eating, a lot of complaining of how bored they are, and a lot of headaches for me.

i decided this year that we were going to keep busy and have a set schedule. plus, i added two girls to two of our days just for funsies. so, on the days we have a full house....we have stations.

here's the run-down:

station 1: choice of tv show/computer game/video game
station 2: puzzles - actual puzzles, crosswords, sodoku, & legos
station 3: reading- summer reading program from the library
station 4: craft central - coloring books, paper, glue, scissors, ribbon, glitter, tissue paper, play-doh
station 5: learning station- workbooks, flash cards, dry-erase boards, brain quest games

so we rotate. each station is 30 minutes and they can do whatever they want as long as they stay in their station. for the most part, it works. we usually do 2-3 stations then break for a snack or some outside play.

on the days i don't have the girls, we are a little more low key. i don't want to burn my kids out on the stations, so we just do our summer workbooks and reading and throw some learning games in there. and then of course we have to have some fun, too! the pool and the playground, ball practice & games, summer festivals, holidays, vacation, and just hanging out.

we're going to make it.

this clip sums up my day today so far. i had to take a break for some comic relief before i kill someone. not literally, of course, just in case you were all just thinking i am exempt from prosecution since i'm married to the prosecutor and all. he will actually probably yell at me for even writing that.

its one of those days where i hate my house. my clothes. my body. and all the crap i am responsible for like folding and putting away the MASSIVE pile of laundry that keeps giving me dirty looks from across the couch. part of that pile has been laying there for two days. and seriously. my kids are acting just like the kids in the video. and not coincidentally, i have acted just like arnie when he freaks out. the kids cry and then i cry for yelling at them.

summer is rough.

after re-reading this post and thinking of what a huge b i sound like and also remembering how i ripped into a bag of chocolate chips and ate them up like an insane person, i did some calculating in my head and realized i am about to start my lady business.

so, meet pms-jen. cause she will be here for the next several days.
