Cookbook review: homemade with love

My idea of a good time is walking the aisles of Barnes n Nobles and reading as much as I can before they kick me out. Usually, you can find me in the cookbook aisle. There is just nothing better than a brand new cookbook (maybe a brand new colorful children's book?), other than brand new kitchen tools...I mean, if you really want to wow me, bring both. So I was there this week, checking out the cookbooks and there is just so many lovely ones and I was having a hard time deciding what I wanted to buy. I kept going back to one, though. Homemade with Love by Jennifer Pirello.

I have a few rules when it comes to cookbook buying. 1- if there is a higher percentage of recipes with ingredients I can't pronounce, or have a hard time finding, or my family would touch it, then it's out. Most vegetarian cookbooks are out bc what the hell is tempeh?! Or seitan? I'm 30 now and pretty much out of the exploring who you are or what you like stage. Call me old fashioned, but seriously. Rule 2- if it is a well known blogger and I have made recipes from their blog that are featured in their book, I probably won't buy it. I love the Pioneer Woman, but after finding most of her 1st book's recipes on her just seemed silly. Although, I did meet her and she signed my copy so that's always cool.
Rule 3 - I've got to love the look of it, because it stays on my kitchen counter. So, ugly books - out.

Jennifer Pirello's book followed all of my rules. She is a blogger, but not one that I had heard of. And she has a great resume when it comes to cooking. Her book focuses on from-scratch cooking, which I do mostly, so it seemed like a good fit.

And it is. I am in love with this book. I can't wait to just make everything in it. I made an adaptation of the cherry pie pockets, using a homemade strawberry filling instead and even though I rolled the dough out too thin and they were pretty wonky, they were absolutely delish. I will make them again. There's a kale, bean, and ravioli soup I can't wait to make and the loose essay on her drop chicken pot pie recipe is quite moving. It was her late husband's favorite dish and recording the recipe for her book was "a baby step in a very long, exhausting journey of grief". It's a personal book...and I like that in a cook. It makes me trust them a little. She even wrote in her daughter's favorite snack recipes and I really appreciate that. Snacks! It's like the bane of my existence. Especially over the summer. Any mom to multiple littles will know what I mean.

Sections include: Everyday basics, breakfast on the go, hot breakfasts, soups, sandwiches, and salads, pasta, beans, and grains, meaty mains, seafood, pizza, tarts, and breads, sides and vegetables, snacks, sweet treats, drinks, and condiments.

If you're looking for a good cookbook, get this one.
